The Brief; Students will experiment with alternative visual responses to a personally authored piece of writing, informed by research within and beyond graphic design (film, poetry, creative writing, photography…). These interdisciplinary themes will encourage students to access more diverse and experimental approaches to narrative and move beyond conventions of the traditional book.
My narrative explores my perspective of a roller coaster accident that left me with recurring back
problems. Because of the nature of my story I decided to split the narrative in two parts (and two
separate books) as I felt this depicted it best. ‘1 in 3, 284’ is the narrative of the accident itself,
while ‘In the 15%’ is two smaller narratives about how my injuries from the accident affected me
after.

I chose to use bold shapes to create an impact, as I liked the idea of linking the aesthetics to theme
park imagery, which often have bold shapes and bright colours. However due to the tone of the
narrative I felt it would be best to avoid a mixture of bright colours and instead to use black and a
vivid yellow, as these are the colours of the roller coaster itself, as well as having connotations of
warning signs etc.
